GOC Gardens Group visit to Treborth Botanic Gardens, North Wales

As part of the All Wales Weekend in Llanberis, a number of members visited Treborth Botanic Gardens, which are owned by Bangor University. We were met by Sarah Edgar, Chair of the Friends of Treborth Botanic Garden, who  told us about the history of the site,  the Garden’s relationship with China, and the current construction of a Welsh Herbal Garden. We then split into two groups, some heading off to do a stretch of  the Welsh Coast path along the Menai Strait. Neil led the others around the gardens, pointing out features and plants of interest. We also visited the Tropical and Carnivorous Greenhouses, which were fascinating – the orchids were looking especially good, and the shapes of some of the carnivorous plants generated some discussion. Although a small botanic garden, it is very well looked after by an enthusiastic group of volunteers and a small number of paid staff. We reassembled for the mandatory group photos before saying our farewells and making plans about where else we would see each other over the weekend. A place well worth spending an hour or two if you are in the area and are interested in plants or gardens.
