SOLENT – Salisbury to Old Sarum
A walk from Salisbury Town Centre taking in Cathedral Close and the Cloisters, then along the River Avon before ascending to Old Sarum, the original Salisbury which started out as a hill fort before the Castle was built. The outer ring is not far off a mile in length but those wanting a shorter walk can avoid this. We will have a picnic stop here where it is possible to visit the Castle (EH charge applies) and also to see the foundations of the original Cathedral. We then descend to cross the River Avon over a footbridge followed by a little urbinisation before walking through the attractive village of Bemerton. Then we traverse the Rivers Wylie and Nadder before crossing the Medieval Flood plain bisected with many ditches and sluices which were used in mid winter to stop the pasture freezing meaning they could use it early for sheep grazing. It was from here that Constable painted his famous pictures of the Cathedral. At the end of the walk we are all invited back to the leaders flat in Salisbury for Tea.
