High Cup from Dufton
We will walk through farmland and rough moorland typical of the Pennines, to an almost geometrically perfect U-shaped glacial valley; High Cup, will suddenly come into view. This is considered to be one of the finest natural features in Northern England! We will walk to the end of the valley, where High Cup Nick allows Highcup Gill Beck to flow down into the valley through a tumble of boulders. We will not follow the footpath through the boulders but will skirt the other side of the valley and then down Middle Tongue and through farmland to the atmospheric quarried red sandstone valley of Dufton Gill before returning to the starting point. People wanting a shorter walk without missing too much of the spectacular scenery could turn back at any time from when High Cup comes into view.
Suitable for dogs (on leads for some of the time), as there will be livestock (cattle and sheep).
