Circular walk starting at The Sill, National Landscape Discovery Centre, Northumberland. From The Sill a half mile quiet road walk to ascend to Hadrian’s Wall. The walk crosses to north side of wall, turning east below the Whin Sill escarpment. Some of the most scenic and preserved sections of the Wall are along the top of Whin Sill.

We follow good paths, crossing over the Pennine Way then pass to the north of Housesteads Fort as far as Milecastle 36 where we will turn south to join the Wall for the return westwards along Hadrian’s Way. From the top of Whin Sill escarpment there are good views to the south of the Pennines and Northumberland's moorland to the north. The path is well walked, but note there are a number of short, steep descents and inclines, including at Sycamore Gap, made famous in the film ‘Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves’.

An easier alternative for those who might prefer to miss the undulations on the return leg is to walk along the Roman Military Way marched by the Roman legions which is a short distance to the south and parallel to the Wall,
