9 Nov 2024: Harlington & the Barton Hills
A circular walk of 8.3 miles in south Beds, absorbing the glory of mid-autumn amidst elegant well-maintained houses and the majesty of the Barton Hills. The outbound journey features pretty villages with pleasing modern architecture with middle-distance views bearing west to north. The return journey follows a ridge running south-west running parallel to the Barton Hills, offering views to the middle- to long-distance bearing north-east to south-west. The views include sight of the Biggleswade Array (electric windmills) to the north (they poke over hills) and the Sharpenhoe Clappers. If we are really lucky with the weather, a clear day with a setting sun illuminates the Barton valley in a juicy orange hue.
Altitude ranges from 416ft (127m) to 636ft (194m), with most gradients being mild and two gradients somewhat challenging. The long gradient is 49.1m incline over 2.17km. The short gradient is 38.2m over 538m.
Nearly 40% of the route is on pavement. The remaining 60% is off-road, some of which will be ploughed fields and therefore expect mud.
Some fields will contain horses, sheep and cows.
All of the route is exposed. Depending on the weather, wear sunscreen and/or windproofs and/or waterproofs.
Wear sturdy boots or similar thick-soled shoes. Whether wet or concrete-dry, the ground will be too uneven for trainers.
Bring packed lunch, plenty of water and something to sit on. Lunch is going to be sat on the ground, exposed, and might be later than normal (because of unexpected sheep in the lunching area), so bring a packed snack, too.
Bring a torch to insure against running out of daylight to complete the walk.
Ten minutes after the start point is a corner shop and a café, both of which serve coffees.
The start point is accessible by public transport.
Optional pub crawl at the end of the walk, a choice of two pubs, 7 mins away from the railway station.
