Chilling at Chilham Castle Gardens – part of AOG

The sun shone for a great finale to the AOG 2023 for the garden enthusiasts amongst us on a visit to Chilham Castle near Canterbury. A privately owned property that recently changed hands for a mere £15 million, it really is a stunning garden. A warm welcome from the lady on the gate set the scene. The gardens consist of a series of well maintained lawns with fine views, topiary, expansive herbaceous borders, a productive walled garden, including a cut flower section, lots of very mature mulberry trees that were laden with fruit, and a big lake that we walked around. Many unusual plants to be seen all looking very healthy.  Lots of oohs and ahs! Wonderful mostly red brick hard landscaping too. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and this was followed by a visit to the nearby Church Mouse Cafe where we sat in the square soaking up the atmosphere of a quintessential English village. I was also very pleased to purchase a few bargains at the plant sales table so a little piece of Chilham will soon be growing on the Gower Peninsiula in South Wales. It was most enjoyable spending the day sharing our passion for all things horticulture and am looking forward to many more such events.  The recommendation from local GOC members John anf Gary was an inspired choice - thank you both.
