
Lancaster Town Walk (Sunday)
A guided walk around the historic sites of Lancaster
Starting from the bus station we head up Darnside Street towards the Lune river and St. George's Quay. Turning left down Vicarage Lane we visit the Roman Bath House. As we continue we pass the Roman Fort we then see the Priory Church of St. Mary.
After seeing the Judge's Lodgings we visit Lancaster Castle which is closely associated with John of Gaunt the 1st Duke of Lancaster. Moving on via Castle Hill we enter King Street to stop at the Penny's Hospital Almshouses. Wandering into the heart of the town into the Market area we stop outside the dignified old town hall, which houses the City Museum. After that we proceed along Market Street, turn right down Penny Lane and then left along Brook Street to enter Dalton Square for a lunch break.
After lunch we continue along Nelson Street to walk along the canal which still has many cotton mills that grew up in the 19th century. We then walk up Moor Lane passing the Duke's Playhouse and the Grand Theatre.
The route has a couple of steep flights of steps and there are some hills, but will be on good paved or gravel paths throughout. Wear suitable shoes and clothing for the weather conditions.
