A walk in the upland Carboniferous Limestone landscape of the Orton Fells in Cumbria (now part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park). We'll walk the length of Smardale Gill, with its river - Scandal Beck - and also the shallower but moody Potts Valley, with Potts Beck. Much of the walk is through or alongside, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). We'll also visit the village of Crosby Garret, with it's church, parts of which date from around, or even before, the Norman Conquest. There are also numerous archeological features, including well preserved Pillow Mounds, at the southern end of Smardale Gill. The walk also crosses for a short while, Ravenstonedale Moor, which is commonland. We also get to walk along the disused railway line, including Smardale Viaduct, that originally ran from Tebay to Kirkby Stephen, much of which is now nature reserve, due to its high wildlife interest. By consensus, we could also walk through the village of Newbiggin-on-Lune.
