Shap history, landscape, and geological contrasts
A walk with history - potentially spanning 5000 years - including the few remaining standing stones of a 2-mile long avenue of stones that would have rivalled that of Avebury in Wiltshire, the Premonstratensian Shap Abbey, and Keld Chapel (National Trust, although unfortunately it is closed for restoration). It is also a walk of contrasting landscapes, from the limestone of Shap itself, to the moors above Swindale and within the Lake District National Park, and the River Lowther that separates the two. This is an area not often visited, but with much interest.
