Saturday Cycle Ride to Dollar and Gleneagles

Event Details

A 45 mile cycle ride to Dollar, Pool of Muckhart and Gleneagles.

Gleneagles is famous for its very posh hotel, used in the past for international summits (the G8 was held here in 2005) and its exclusive golf course, but otherwise it's just a small village just outside Achterarder.  Glen Eagles itself is a valley that bisects the Ochil Hills and is a good descent by bicycle, where you ride down from nearly 300m to Gleneagles, passing the hotel (at a respectful distance of course).

We will ride from the University out eastward, quickly joining NCN routes 768 and 767 to Dollar (in Stirlingshire).  We have to join the A91 near Pool of Muckhart and the A823 down to the pass of Glen Eagles, but these are relatively quiet roads.  Minor roads are taken from here to Braco, followed by a short section of main road to Greenloaning.  A very quiet lane takes us over the west end of the Ochils to Bridge of Allan and back to the university, or we could go via Dunblane.  Café options in most of the villages - Auchterarder and its cafés is a short diversion off the route.

Not a flat cycle ride but there are no particularly steep climbs.  The climb up to Glen Eagles goes up to 270m, while the return lane to Bridge of Allan climbs to just over 300m.

The ride is on minor roads and some sections on quiet A roads, with some sections of dedicated cycle route. There will inevitably be some crossing of busy A roads.
