A lovely coastal walk, that is unknown to most who visit the popular areas of the Lake District National Park. We shall be taking the train from Silecroft to Green Road (2 stops) and then walking back to Silecroft, entirely on the coast. Initially, this is alongside the stunningly beautiful Duddon Estuary, with fine views of fells to the north and east. Eventually we reach Millom, and its post-industrial heritage, including a former ironworks, and the former dock known as Borwick Rails Harbour, before reaching the iron mines and quarries of Hodbarrow Nature Reserve (RSPB). The route then passes through Haverigg with its tiny harbour on Haverigg Pool, before following dunes and then the beach, for some 5 miles back to Silecroft.
Note, the delay of one week from the original date of the walk, means that the route will now be in reverse (i.e from Silecroft to Green Road) in order to make it possible to walk on Silecroft Beach when it isn't high tide. See also, the changes for the meeting and parking place, now at Green Road Station, taking the train to Silecroft.
