A walk on the island of Walney. We'll follow the England Coast Path, around the northern two-thirds of this large and relatively flat island, where the sea is always close at hand. Close too, is a great deal of history, both near-modern and more ancient, from the views over the Walney Channel to the shipyard and docks of Barrow; to a narrow pre-bridge causeway that links Walney to the mainland, and the village settlements of Biggar and North Scale, as well as elegant buildings on "the front" in Vickerstown, and the ancient Piel Castle. The walk is partly urban, but mostly surprisingly very rural. There is that "edge of the world" feeling here - exhilarating and very relaxing to walk around. We shall also visit parts of North Walney National Nature Reserve, with its wet meadows, dunes, and dune slacks and ponds. The views towards the Lake District are stunning.
