Mynydd Illtud Common Walk, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park
This is a majestic 7 mile walk around Mynydd Illtud Common in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, providing panoramic views of all four mountain massifs which make up the Brecon Beacons.
The walk initially climbs to the magnificent vantage point of Twyn y Gaer, on a gradual climb. This was once an Iron Age hillfort and from the trig point marking the top, 360 degree, widescreen views of Pen-y-Fan and Corn Du, the Black Mountains and the river Usk below, can be enjoyed.
After descending Twyn y Gaer, on a gentle decline, the rest of the walk meanders and snakes around the expanse of the common, mainly on a level and flat route, and allowing views of all angles of the surrounding hills and mountains, always overlooked by the imposing and beautiful mountains of both Pen-y-Fan and Corn Du, the highest and the second highest peaks respectively in Southern Britain.
An abundance of Red kites can be seen along the route, and larks, wheatears and stonechats can be heard in the gorse and bushes.
