  • TerrainA more strenuous walk with one significant hill climb and a steep descent OR a more moderate walk on relatively lower levels through the valley

This is a walk with two options, from and to Llanthony Priory in the Llanthony valley, at the southern end of the Vale of Ewyas, deep in the Black Mountains.  Day Two of the All Wales Weekend.

The first stage of the walk is almost four miles to the hamlet of Capel-y-ffin from Llanthony, along lanes and the lower Offa's Dyke Path on a lower level, slightly undulating route.  There will be muddy sections here following recent rain.  From Capel-y-ffin, the walks splits into two:

Stephen will lead a quite strenuous, but glorious trek up and along the Ffawyddog Ridge, high above the Llanthony valley.  The climb to the ridge is strenuous - initially a strenuous climb, then flatter for a while, and then a final strenuous climb to the top of the ridge, and will take about an an hour.  The reward is a fabulous mountain ridge walk with sweeping views of Sugar Loaf, Skirrid, and beyond, down to the Bristol Channel (in good weather).  The route eventually drops steeply from the ridge on a well-trodden path that allows great views of the valley and the priory.  A total distance of about 9 miles.

Alternatively, Ben will lead those who would rather not do the climb, on a similar lower-level route, on the other side of the valley, back to Llanthony Priory.  A total distance of about 8 miles.

Good walking boots and adequate mountain weather clothing is essential.  There are toilets at Llanthony Priory and the walk will finish at the cafe/pub in the grounds of the priory itself, where soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and food is served.

Only two stiles, along the Offa's Dyke Path, where dogs will have to be carried over.  A great walk for dogs, but there will be sheep around on the climb up and wild horses on the tops.

10 am start.

Mae hon yn daith gerdded gyda dau opsiwn, o ac i Briordy Llanddewi Nant Hodni yn nyffryn Llanddewi Nant Hodni, ym mhen deheuol Dyffryn Ewyas, yn ddwfn yn y Mynyddoedd Du. Ail Ddiwrnod Penwythnos Cymru Gyfan.

Mae cam cyntaf y daith bron i bedair milltir i bentrefan Capel-y-ffin o Landdewi Nant Hodni, ar hyd lonydd a rhan isaf Llwybr Clawdd Offa ar lwybr lefel is, ychydig yn donnog. Bydd darnau mwdlyd yma yn dilyn glaw diweddar. O Gapel-y-ffin, mae’r teithiau cerdded yn rhannu’n ddau:

Bydd Stephen yn arwain taith eithaf egnïol, ond gogoneddus i fyny ac ar hyd Crib Ffawyddog, yn uchel uwchben dyffryn Llanddewi Nant Hodni. Mae'r ddringfa i'r grib yn egnïol - dringfa egnïol i ddechrau, yna'n fwy gwastad am ychydig, ac yna dringfa egnïol olaf i ben y grib, a bydd yn cymryd tua awr. Y wobr yw taith gerdded grib mynydd wych gyda golygfeydd ysgubol o Ben-y-fâl, Ysgyryd, a thu hwnt, i lawr i Fôr Hafren (mewn tywydd da). Yn y pen draw, mae'r llwybr yn disgyn yn serth o'r grib ar lwybr sathredig sy'n caniatáu golygfeydd gwych o'r dyffryn a'r priordy. Cyfanswm pellter o tua 9 milltir.

Fel arall, bydd Ben yn arwain y rhai y byddai’n well ganddynt beidio â dringo, ar lwybr lefel is tebyg, yr ochr arall i’r dyffryn, yn ôl i Briordy Llanddewi Nant Hodni. Cyfanswm pellter o tua 8 milltir.

Mae esgidiau cerdded da a dillad tywydd mynydd digonol yn hanfodol. Mae toiledau ym Mhriordy Llanddewi Nant Hodni a bydd y daith yn gorffen yn y caffi/tafarn ar dir y priordy ei hun, lle gweinir diodydd meddal, diodydd alcoholig a bwyd.

Dim ond dwy gamfa, ar hyd Llwybr Clawdd Offa, lle bydd rhaid cario cŵn drosodd. Taith gerdded wych i gŵn, ond bydd defaid o gwmpas ar y dringo i fyny a cheffylau gwyllt ar y topiau.

dechrau am 10am.
