Langden Castle Fells
Langden Castle Fells
This is a long walk on the remote fells of the Forest of Bowland, walking up Langden Brook (a sizeable river, reminiscent of rivers in Scotland and recently featured on the BBC Countryfile), passing Langden Castle on the way . (Don't get too excited - it's a shooting bothy; its gothic style windows the only bit of architectural flamboyance.) From 'The Castle' we climb Fiendsdale Head to the the high point on Fair Snape Fell then continue over the moorland to the trig point and Tottridge. A zig zag path, not shown on maps takes us down toward Mellor Knoll to join the public right of way back to the car park at Hareden.
C12 miles (20km), 1500ft (450m) of ascent.
A challenging walk on rough terrain which will require careful route finding to avoid peat haggs and boggy ground. One river crossing, which should be no issue in normal conditions. A steady climb to Fiendsdale Head and a short steep descent off Tottridge. Fine views throughout give a great feel of remoteness in this lonely area, considering you're not far from large centres of population.
Numbers on this walk are limited to 15.
