Gardens: NT Llanerchaeron – part of Aberystwyth West Wales Spring weekend
- Part of the Aberystwyth West Wales Spring weekend, this event is timed so that attendees can also join in a tour of Aberystwyth in the afternoon led by Al if they wish.
Set in the beautiful Aeron Valley, this John Nash villa, completed in 1795, has its principal rooms arranged around a central, top lit staircase hall. Two former bedrooms house a unique assortment of antiques and curiosities that were owned by a woman who was just as interesting as her collection.
The servants’ area to the rear of the house clearly shows the distinction between the everyday life of the owners and their hard-working staff. In the service courtyard you'll find a mix of utilitarian buildings including the dairy, bakehouse and brew-house
Within the walled garden you will find ancient fruit trees, remnants of horticultural technology spanning the lifetime of the garden, herbaceous borders and an impressive herb garden.
In the yard, there is treasure trove of early 20th-century agricultural and domestic machinery and implements, as well as horse drawn carts and carriages, and a magnificent steam engine named ‘Glenys’. There are still Llanwenog sheep and Welsh pigs on the parkland, sometimes they can be seen on the farmyard, giving you a clue to the use of the buildings.
