Lyme Park is a large estate south of Disley, Cheshire, England, managed by the National Trust and consisting of a mansion house surrounded by formal gardens and a deer park in the Peak District National Park. The house is the largest in Cheshire and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

The formal gardens include a Dutch Garden created by William Legh with formal flower beds around a central fountain. There is also an orangery designed by architect Lewis Wyatt in the 1800’s, a reflection lake, lawns, rhododendrons and rose gardens. The exterior of Lyme Hall was used during the filming of the BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice in 1995 in which Mr Darcy (played by Colin Firth) walks out of the lake and sets many a heart fluttering, not just the ladies either!

The extensive grounds are home to both red and fallow deer.  Our walk up to the Cage (overlooking the main house) gives a good chance to see the deer from this elevated spot.

We shall be visiting the gardens as the final throws of summer vibrancy fade away and the garden enters the Autumn faze and takes on a different look. There will still be some nice colour around in the borders and the surrounding trees will just be on the turn and starting to change colour. Perfect timing for a last look around before a 5k walk through the surrounding parkland afterwards.

If you don’t want to eat at the cafe onsite then please bring a packed lunch with you.

Meet near the Refreshment Kiosk which is next to the main car park, we can decide if we want to do the house and the garden or just the garden, depending upon the weather!
