Caldey (Welsh: Ynys Bŷr) is a small island off the south coast of Pembrokeshire, accessible by boat from Tenby. It is one of Britain’s ‘Holy Islands’- the major activity on Caldey is the Cistercian Monastery. This walk is mainly flat, with a few gentle inclines, and is only 5 miles long.

After arriving on the island, we will walk towards the ‘village’, which is a small group of houses all linked to the monastery. We will explore the peaceful woodland walks in the sheltered northern part of the island before moving to the very wild cliff-top landscape of the south with beautiful cliff-top views over to Lundy Island and the North Devon Coast. During the walk, we will break for lunch (either bring your own or a café is on the island although it can get very busy). It is hoped that one of the monks – Brother Titus will be able to lead part of the day’s walk around parts of the monastery, and to some of the early Christian sites nearby. There will be time after the walk has ended to have tea and cake, visit a couple of gift shops, or relax on the island’s beautiful beaches before the last boat departs.

Please note:

  1. The cost of the ferry crossing across to Caldey is likely to be £17-20.
  2. This is a Saturday walk (there are no ferry crossings to Caldey on Sundays).
  3. If you remain on the island after the walk has finished, carefully note the time of the last boat to the mainland, which is always marked on a board as you arrive on Caldey by the jetty! This time changes daily.
  4. We will explore a backup walk, starting at the same meeting point in Tenby if the boat crossings are cancelled on the day. A message on the likelihood of a crossing for the following day can be accessed on 01834 842220 after 7 p.m.
