This walk is part of the Northumberland Coastal Weekend, but you can join just for this walk.

Starting from the car park just outside Craster we start walking through fields alongside the Great Whin Sill formed millions of years ago through volcanic activity. We then move onto the top of the whin sill from where we can see down to the sea. We cut down towards the castle and then follow either the beach or the coastal path (depending on tides) to Low Newton where we break for lunch.

Return journey follows the same route as far as the castle. Those who wish to visit Dunstanburgh castle can do so (free to English Heritage and National Trust members otherwise £7.70.) We return along the coastal path to Craster fishing village with its smoke house, pub and café, from where it is a short walk back to the car park.

Note that there are often sheep grazing along the route so dogs will need to be on leads for part of the time. Dogs are allowed on the beach.

It is possible for those who want a shorter walk to join us at Low Newton at lunchtime for a one way walk, either using a bus to High Newton or car sharing. The car park at Low Newton is £7 for the day. There is a free one in High Newton. Please note in the comments if you plan to do this so that we are not waiting for you in the morning.
