Constitution hill, including Penglais nature reserve – part of West Wales weekend

Event Details

No visit to Aberystwyth is complete without ascending Constitution hill and enjoying the classic views of "the Biarritz of Wales" and the beautiful expanse of Cardigan Bay.

This circular walk passes through Penglais nature park, Aberystwyth golf course and overlooks the Clarach valley before ascending to Constitution hill from the north, on the coast path.

It is a steepish climb in the nature reserve and then a gentle up through the golf course.

We then go through Coed Y Cwm woodland, before descending steeply on a short stretch, and joining a road to go to Clarach where we will have a stop in the lovely churchyard.

We continue to Clarach beach where we will have a lunch stop.

It's about a 25 minute walk from here to Constitution hill on the coast path, which goes steeply up.

At the summit you will find one of the world’s largest Camera Obscuras, which offers a bird’s eye view of 1000

square miles of land and seascape.

We will have a 30 minute or so, stop on Constitution Hill, so people can get a cuppa and see the camera obscura. Constitution hill also boasts the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain, which has been transporting visitors to the summit since opening in 1896. You will also find historical displays, a kids play area, a well-stocked gift shop, and a cafe selling delicious home-made snacks.

Then we rejoin the coast path, for a very short stretch and descend back to Aberystwyth seafront.

***Anyone who is leaving today could get the cliff railway back to the centre of Aberystwyth, and just do the first part of the walk.
