Chipperfield and the Chess Valley
Roaming through a landscape steeped in wildlife, history and secrets.
We will stroll through Chipperfield Common and join the Hertfordshire Way on our journey to quaint Latimer village before approaching a stately property which was where POW’s were held captive in World War II while being bugged by "secret listeners." We then pass along the Chess River before ascending to Chenies Manor house. It was visited by Henry VIII and his wives Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard and his daughter Elizabeth I stayed at this property for a month during her reign. We will then pass along the Chess Valley into the fictional location of Sarratt as per John Le Carre spy novels with an interrogation centre called the nursery with his main character George Smiley. It has been stated by some that “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" was based on the Latimer Estate. We will continue our stroll into ancient woodlands (look for the owl and the elephant!) before joining the Chiltern Way on returning to Chipperfield.
Optional pub stop at the end of the walk.
Bring packed lunch, snacks, water and something to sit on. Wear sturdy boots and waterproofs.
