Carn Ingli, Newport, Pembrokeshire
This walk is approx. 9 - 9.5 miles long and includes some relatively steep ascents and descents. It is strenuous at the start, up onto Carn Ingli then a moderate walk.
We start off by walking up Long St., crossing the main road and then on up towards the castle. We then follow the lanes up towards Castle Hill which take us onto a common situated below the outcrop of Carn Ingli.
The views down to Newport and out over Newport Bay are magnificent (weather permitting!). Once at the top we have put the main uphill climb of this walk behind us. We continue across Carningli Common with splendid views across towards the Preselis, passing Mynydd Caregog and eventually reaching a small car park near Bedd Morris. We turn right onto a lane and then after a short distance we turn left onto Parc Mawr and start a long and gradual descent towards the coast, passing by a couple of farms and other dwellings until we finally reach the main A487 which we cross over and continue on down towards Fforest Farm.
Here we join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path which takes us back to Newport (Trefdraeth). The path runs along the top of the cliffs, offering some more spectacular scenery and perhaps even the chance to see dolphins or seals. There are one or two more short and steep ascents and descents and in a couple of places the path is quite close to the cliff edge.
Once back in Newport there are of course various options for refreshments. One that caught our eye but was closed when we did the recce (mid week), is the Castle Inn which is not far from the car park and has outdoor seating at the rear of the building.
