A mid-week meet at the remote Black Sail Youth Hostel
Black sail is a former shepherd's bothy in a very remote setting at the head of Ennerdale. Pillar mountain rises in front of the hostel while Great Gable dominates the head of the valley.
The hostel is only accessible on foot or by bicycle. From Buttermere, its roughly 2.5 miles on a mountain path over Scarth Gap pass. From Ennerdale lake its a 6 mile walk or cycle on forestry roads, or from Wasdale Head its a 3 mile walk on mountain paths over Black Sail pass. A head torch will be essential.
You will need to carry all your clothes and equipment for the weekend yourselves. Bedding is provided but you'll need your own towels (lightweight travel towel recommended). We can pool the carrying of food for breakfasts and evening meals and I'll be in touch nearer the time to coordinate this.
There will be a longish mountain walk arranged on the Tuesday, a shorter walk will be arranged for the Wednesday allowing a finish by mid-afternoon for those who have to travel.
There is cooking equipment and bedding is provided, but you will need to bring your own towel.
People intending to take part in this event should read GOC's document Safety in the Hills.
