Aberystwyth Town trail, afternoon walk – part of the West Wales weekend
Come and get to know the centre of Aberystwyth, it has so much to offer and there is so much to see.
This is a 2-3 mile walk, with mainly easy walking in and around the centre of Aberystwyth, and where people can leave the walk at any
stage. There is an uphill section towards the end of the walk where we wander up to the Library of Wales and the Arts centre where people
can get some refreshments and where the walk will end.
Everyone can then return to the centre of Aber, in their own time.
Aberystwyth still retains evidence of its mediaeval castle and town walls.
The first Aberystwyth castle was situated about 2 miles south of the present one, at the mouth of the River Ystwyth.
The building of the castle started in 1277.
The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries saw the expansion of the town.
The great stimulus from the 1860's onwards was the railway which enabled Aberystwyth to develop into a seaside town of wider appeal.
The walk will explore the harbour, the castle, the old college, the county museum and tourist information centre, the Promenade of course, the town hall and the University and arts centre.
Most of the walk will be on the flat but we will go uphill at one point to The Library of Wales, Aberystwyth University and the Arts centre.
The plan is for this to be the last point at the end of the walk. The Arts centre has a cafe so everyone can do their own thing at the end, refreshments, and/or a look around the galleries and make their own way back.
Whilst on the walk the meeting points for the walks over the weekend and where the train goes from, can be pointed out.
