Mayburgh Henge, the villages Askham and Helton, and Moor Divock, including the cockpit stone circle.

Event Details

A visit to the Mayburgh Henge near Eamont Bridge, Penrith, followed by a walk in the beautiful countryside around the pretty villages of Askham and Helton.  There is a heavy historical  and archaeological interest, with Moor Divock, located on Askham Fell near Ullswater, forming a massive prehistoric landscape spanning the Neolithic to medieval periods. It features the famous Bronze Age Cockpit stone circle, multiple smaller cairns, stone rows, and the ancient High Street Roman road.  Mayburgh is a large and impressive Neolithic henge. Its banks stand up to three metres high, constructed of pebbles collected from the nearby river. Near the centre is a single standing stone. Old drawings suggest that it was one of a group here, with two more pairs standing at either entrance, but they have since been removed.
