  • Approx Distance 11.5 Miles
  • TerrainEasy walking with very little ascent - surfaced tracks, short distances on quiet roads, fields with some stiles and slightly uneven ground, canal towpath. "Moderate" difficulty is due to the length. Suitable for dogs (on leads for much of the time) but there will be livestock (cattle and sheep) in some fields, and wildlife along the canal. There are some low stiles, and we will cross an airfield used by light aircraft.

The walk starts on the disused railway to Glasson Dock, which remains a working port. The canal basin contains numerous sea-going vessels. We will then walk to Cockersand Abbey chapterhouse and have good views of Sunderland Point and towards Fleetwood. A bit later, we will cross an airfield used by parachuters and head across fields to Cockerham, Ellel Grange, and the junction of the Lancaster Canal main channel and Glasson branch, which we will follow almost back to Glasson Dock before heading back to the car park.
