We have been fascinated about Yorkshire’s ‘Rhubarb Triangle’ since first hearing about it decades ago. Then we heard about Wakefield’s Rhubarb Festival so thought it was the perfect opportunity to check it out and go to RHS Harlow Carr, a garden that’s been on the bucket list for a long time. We also managed to book places on a tour of a rhubarb farm near Pudsey. The festival ran over the weekend, with about 50 stalls serving everything from a liqueur called Rhucello to pickles, cakes and savoury dishes. There were lots of cookery demonstrations by local chefs - creations included rhubarb pizza and curry (not together!). There was a great buzz and several treats were tried and tasted. Many cafes and restaurants had rhubarb themed menus. The rhubarb latte took a little getting used to but a big yes to the rhubarb blondie. The Rhubarb Farm tour was also really interesting, as we walked around fields of the vegetable (yes, it is botanically classed as a vegetable, just as everyone knows tomatoes are fruits!) and we heard about the long history of the industry locally. We learnt why this part of Yorkshire has the best growing conditions to produce it commercially. We saw different varieties, toured a ‘forcing shed’ before seeing how rhubarb gin is made and were shown how to propagate the plant. All rounded off with coffees, teas, scones and yes, rhubarb jam! A most enjoyable trip. Many thanks to those who joined us. Some photos from Stephen.
