On a beautiful sunny morning 22 of us (2 being new members) met up at the church of St Wolfrida (rebuilt in 1722). Starting our walk a little later than planned due to parking problems we crossed fields of crops and woodland arriving at Chalbury Church; the oldest portion of the edifice said to be early English (1180-1280).
We then proceeded across country passing fields of rape seed in full flower, through Holt Wood partly covered in bluebells, finally arriving at Horton Tower our picnic site. Horton Tower or Sturts Folly's history is unclear but thought to have been built about 1750 by Humphrey Sturt. Vodafone now use the tower as a mobile phone transmission mast. At this point 2 of our party left the walk and 4 more joined us.
After our picnic we walked through Ferndown Forest and Horton Wood also partly covered in bluebells towards Remedy Oak Golf Club, skirting the golf course on the new footpath back to our cars. We were kindly invited afterwards to Kev and Gorden’s home and given a fantastic meal (for which we all thank you!).
