Warwick and the Grand Union Canal
This is a beautiful, tranquil 9 mile summer walk starting in the historic market place in Warwick.
After crossing Warwick Racecourse we walk through the Saltisford Canal Garden before dropping down to the Grand Union towpath which takes us up to Hatton Locks.
The canal was opened in 1799 and is known for its flights of 21 locks. The canal path is very wide and ideal for groups.
Here we shall have our lunch stop around 12.30. If you brought your own there is a picnic area. If not there is the superb Canal cafe serving fresh food. The plum tart comes recommended. Alternatively there is the option of a cheeky ginger ale at the 18th Century Hatton Arms pub.
After lunch we leave the canal venturing across countryside passing Turkey farm and Deer Park. The path through the fields are gently undulating and you will enjoy exquisite views before we arrive back in Warwick.
I am planning to have a drink in one of the pubs in market square after the walk and you be welcome to join us before you head home. They all serve beer, soft drinks and coffee.
