Tempsford, Bedfordshire
A beautiful and interesting walk that aims to tell you of the SOE (Special Operations Executive) agents who flow out from RAF Tempsford to occupied Europe during World War II (1942 to 1945).
Of fairly easy terrain, this walk is about 10.5 miles long and begins near Tempsford. Walking through the village of Tempsford, we cross the railway line and continue to the course of the Roman road. Turning south, we eventually arrive at Gibraltar Barn where the agents were issued with their equipment before boarding aircraft for flights to their destination in occupied Europe.
Continuing east to the village of Everton, we then follow the Greensand Ridge Way north through Woodbury Park. At Tetworth Hall, we head west stopping for lunch in the grounds of St Mary's Church before making our way back across the Roman road and across the railway into Tempsford.
Bring packed lunch, plenty of water and something to sit on.
Wear sturdy boots. Route is mainly exposed: use wind-proofs/sunscreen/etc.
There is no viable public transport to the meeting point. Lifts from a nearby railway station might be available from members upon request.
Optional pub stop at the end of the walk.
