Stirling Town Walk (Saturday)
A walk around the historic sites of Stirling from the university campus
We will go from the university to the Wallace Monument on Abbey Craig, then descend to cross the Alloa Road and the railway line to the ruined Cambuskenneth Abbey, passing through Cambuskeneth village and crossing the River Forth into the city centre. We will then pass through some streets with Victorian and modern shops up through the old town with various medieval buildings, to reach the castle via the historic cemetery. The route will end at Old Stirling Bridge (site of the eponymous battle and the famous victory over the English by William Wallace in 1297) possibly visiting Gowanhill and the Beheading Stone en route if time and energy permit. We will return to the campus by bus.
The route has a couple of steep flights of steps and there are some hills, but will be on good paved or gravel paths throughout, except for some short sections on dirt paths (e.g. on descent of Abbey Craig). Wear suitable shoes and clothing for the weather conditions.
