This event is a winter walk from St Albans to Hatfield. Walkers have a choice of point-to-point (6 miles) or circular (12 miles), with railway stations available at each end, or a bus ride back to St Albans. The route is entirely suburban, the greater part being urban and the rest being managed parkland.

The outbound route follows the disused railway line between St Albans and Hatfield. This is mainly hardstanding, with minimal mud, minor track puddles and almost-entirely on the flat. Regarding footwear, sturdy trainers will suffice for this part of the walk.

The return route runs parallel to the outbound route. Whilst most of the return route is on hardstanding, a significant part is off-road. The off-road part is liable to water logging and mud. Regarding footwear, winter walking boots with deep treads are required for the off-road part of the walk. Gaiters recommended if it has been raining three days prior to the walk.

The route is wholly exposed. Expect wind-chill. Wear appropriate warm clothing. Footwear requirements are set out in the paragraphs above.

Food shops and cafes are available at the start point, the lunch point and the end point. Bring plenty of water, perhaps a hot drink, and something to sit on. Bring packed lunch if you prefer.

The start point is accessible by public transport.

The outbound route and part of the return route are accessible to wheelchair users. Wheelchairs must be able to handle unpaved and uneven track (semi-hardstanding). Some gradients are steep, to have allowed for wheeled access, so powered wheelchairs recommended. The wheelchair accessible route terminates at Hatfield, deviating from the route towards town centre bus stop U for transit to the start point.

Optional pub stop, and quality kebab stop, at the end of the walk. Optional breakfast prior to the walk, for which see this separate event.

This walk is also advertised on Meetup.
