Solent, Dorset and Wiltshire – Salisbury to Old Sarum and Charter Fair

Event Details

Commencing in Salisbury from the walk leaders house where hot coffee and bacon rolls will be served pre-walk, we immediately enter and view the historic Cathedral Close before following the River Avon up to the Rotten Borough of Old Sarum with its Iron Age Hill Fort and footprint of the original Cathedral. Here we have a picnic stop with views over Salisbury and attendees have the option of visiting the substantial Norman Castle Remains (£7 or EH Members Free). We then descend to recross the Avon to walk through the outskirts of Salisbury and then through the pretty village of Bemerton to meet the River Nadder and cross the ancient sheep flooding plain with its dykes and ditches. The views here of the Cathedral are superb and were used by Thomas Gainsborough for his famous Salisbury paintings. The walk finishes in the ancient Market Square where the annual Charter Fair (granted by Henry III in 1237) should be in full swing.
