Solent and Dorset – Weekend Away Cornwall
Our annual long weekend away for 2024 is to be the Lizard in Cornwall. Again with 4 walks Friday to Monday and also the suggested accomodation being in a Holiday Village near Helston which is both practical and very good value for money
Friday 13th September. We start with a 5 mile walk South of the Helford River on the East of the Lizard taking in Coastal and Woodland paths with some great views across the Estuary. After booking in at the Holiday Park we plan to eat out in the evening - maybe at the Shipwrights Arms Pub in Helford - dependant on the number of attendees. We commence the walk by meeting in Helford Village Car Park at 13.00 . Post Code TR12 6JU. W3W oval.tiles.blotchy
Saturday 14th September. A full days programme with attendees choosing all or some of the events. We begin with a 5 mile walk in NW Lizard (meet in Trennals Car Park) taking in Prussia Cove and Mounts Bay with a picnic stop at sandy Perranuthnoe Beach which may include a quick dip in the Sea (dependant on tidal times) with its crystal clear water. We then plan to drive 5 miles along the Coast to visit the stunning St Michaels Mount though crossing the Causeway will again depend on tidal times. A little further on is Penzance where we plan in the late afternoon to restock victuals at the local Wetherspoons. Then in the evening there is the option of continuing a little further down the Coast to visit the World Famous and spectacular open-air Minack Theatre with its dramatic position perched atop the rugged cliffs. The evening programme is the Cornish Proms which is a mixture of classical, pop, musical theatre, Cornish songs and with a traditional proms finale. Tickets must be booked individually and in advance as this popular setting is likely to be sold out. Booking opens on the 29th January. Web site www.minack.com. Warm clothing and cushions advisable.
Sunday 15th September. A 6.5 mile walk (from Lizard Village Car Park) taking in Southern Lizard Point and Kynack Cove with splendid Sea Views. Some hilly cliff walks should be anticipated. In the evening the regular get together with food and drink in mine hosts caravan/chalet is planned.
Monday 16th September. A 5 mile easy walk to the North of Falmouth at Myor and Creek (Mylor Bridge Car Park) with a goodbye drinks stop at the picturesque Pandora Inn.
It will not be necessary to register for individual walks. Full details of timings and meeting points will be given out at the start of the weekend. Should any GOC locals or holiday makers wish to join all or any of the events, you will have a warm welcome. Please contact ian martin mob 07803 056989 or [email protected] for further details.
Accomodation suggestion is at Poldown Holiday Park near Helston. Attendees are responsible for booking their own accomodation and it is suggested that they form themselves into small groups to keep down costs. A Gold class caravan sleeping 4 plus 2 is £315 for the 3 nights (valid 22.12.2023) meaning the individual cost for 3 is £105 each or the cost for 4 is £79 each. There are a number of alternative caravans and prices.
