Rotherhithe – Hidden Woods & Waterways
This easy-paced 7-mile circular walk will explore some little known, and surprisingly rural, corners of the peninsula formerly occupied by Surrey Commercial Docks. The walk will be led by Michael Daniels who knows the area well and has led several previous walks in the area focussed on the history of the area. Michael is also President of the Local History Society and he will be able to provide some fascinating insights along the way.
The walk will feature many fascinating points of interest in this historic area of London, including the beautiful Ada Salter Garden, Rotherhithe Village, the tranquil Russia Dock Woodland and some of the finest river views in the world! We will visit Stave Hill, an artificial mound made from spoil created from the excavation of nearby Albion Channel. Despite its modest 30 foot height, it has excellent views over the surrounding area, formerly dominated by the Surrey Docks but completely transformed in recent decades. (There is an interesting model showing the old layout of the docks at the summit). In the afternoon we will visit Surrey Docks Farm, a working city farm and charity which engages and educates people about food production and the natural environment. The farm has a history trail and a riverside café. There will also be an opportunity to visit a charming Thames-side inn at the end of the walk!
