Reading Pride Saturday 31 August 2024

Event Details

Dear Members

A note for your diaries. Reading Pride will be held on Saturday 31 August 2024 in Kings Meadow Reading. In our 50th Anniversary Year Reading Pride will give us a great opportunity to increase awareness of GOC and what we do.

The Love Unites Parade brings the spirit of Pride to the centre of Reading and provides an opportunity for organisations such as ours to show our support for both Pride and the ongoing campaign for equality. The Parade starts off from an assembly point by the southern entrance to Reading Station and sets off about 11am – getting to the Reading Pride Festival at Kings Meadow about 12 noon. The Chairman of GOC Jim Cornwell will be walking in the Parade as well as Vas and I and any other members of GOC who would like to join us  to celebrate Pride.

I have applied for a stall at this year's festival and I will be seeking volunteers nearer the time to run the stall and provide information about GOC and what it does and hopefully attract new members from across the LGBTQ+ community. Members from other groups are of course most welcome to join us on the day and, if interested, helping on the stall.

As in previous years there will also be a funfair, plenty of food and drink stalls and a variety of other community and commercial stalls.

For more information about this year's theme for the festival Love Unites see link:

Background:  Reading became known in the homosexual world in the late 1890s when Oscar Wilde was imprisoned in Reading gaol, after having served time in Pentonville and Wandsworth prisons after having been found guilty of "acts of gross indecency with other male persons"

Many decades later in a far more enlightened society Pride in Reading first took place in 2003 and was created by a group of local volunteers to represent and support the LGBTQIA+ community. Every year since then attendance has risen steadily, with up to 15,000 people attending the event and 1,500 people participating in the parade.

I look forward to seeing as many of you who can make it to Reading Pride 2024. This will be the second time we have participated in the Festival and we hope to make it a regular annual event on our calendar. Nearer the time I will send out further information about the practical arrangements for the day.

Kind regards
