Mellor Heritage Walk
A moderate 7 mile walk in the Mellor area situated in the foothills of the Pennines and close to the Derbyshire border.
We start with a steady ascent to Mellor Church & nearby archaeological excavations at The Old Vicarage Site where two enclosure ditches are thought to have formed part of a pre-historic iron age settlement. On our route we will pass the sites of former textile mills dating from the early industrial revolution and some farms of historical interest, the earliest dating from the 11th Century. In the afternoon a gradual climb to reach Mellor Moor is rewarded with excellent views of the High Peak on a clear day.
Equipment: walking boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, sun protection. Trekking pole(s) recommended if normally used.
Some of the artefacts discovered during excavations of the Mellor hilltop settlement are on display in Stockport Museum (30/31 Market Place, Stockport SK1 1ES). The archaeological publication Mellor: Living on the Edge (2005) explains the discoveries in detail and their wider context in the region.
