  • Start/End Time 11:00 - 16:00
  • Near Warrington, Warrington
  • Groups
  • Approx Distance 7 Miles
  • TerrainMostly good paths with some walking on footpaths by suburban roads - the footpath is narrow crossing the Cantilever bridge. The parts on the Bridgewater canal and Trans-Pennine Trail could be muddy after heavy rain.

This is an easy 7.5 mile walk including a section of the Manchester Ship Canal, a section of the Bridgewater canal and a part of the Trans-Pennine Trail.  We see the huge Latchford Locks on the Ship Canal and walk east along its banks. We will cross the Ship Canal on the striking high level Cantilever Bridge with great views of the surrounding area.  The walk then proceeds along the more traditional Bridgewater Canal through the old centre of Grappenhall Village, under the M6 near Thelwall to the outskirts of Lymm.  At this point we will return along the Trans-Pennine Trail which is a beautiful wooded path following the route of a disused railway line to meet the Ship Canal.  We will cross the Ship Canal at Latchford Locks to the starting point.

There are no fields with livestock so it's a good walk for dogs (which must be kept under control and are the owner's sole responsibility).
