Haughmond Abbey and Haughmond Hill--women only
THIS IS PART OF THE WOMEN ONLY WEEKEND
This 8 to 8.5 mile**** walk will start at Haughmond Abbey, (owned by English Heritage)
which is the extensive remains of an Augustinian abbey, including its abbots' quarters, refectory and cloister.
See http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/haughmond-abbey/
We will then make our way onto Haughmond Hill which is a small shallow hill made up of ancient turbidite sediments from the late Precambrian era which once cascaded off the edge of a continent into the ocean that surrounded it.
The Hill is covered by large woodland and has lots of walking paths including a spectacular viewpoint with family stones made of Criggon Olivine Basalt, Wenlock Limestone and White Sandstone and these monoliths form windows on the viewpoint giving spectacular views down to nearby villages and over to the centre of Shrewsbury.
We then descend off the hill and walk to nearby Uffington village and then by the old Shrewsbury canal and by the River Severn back to Shrewsbury.
This is mainly easy/moderate walking. There are some ups and downs which can be muddy.
Please bring a packed lunch.
***If anyone needs to rush off and wants to shorten this to 5 miles, when we come down off the hill there is a short route back to Haughmond Abbey whilst the others carry on to complete the whole walk back to Shrewsbury.
