Hardingstone, Eleanor Cross and Delapre Abbey – 5 miles
An easy walk on good paths on the outskirts of Northampton.
We will visit the village of Hardingstone with its 15th century church, restored by the Victorians; the Eleanor Cross, one of only three of the original twelve remaining; and finally Delapre Abbey, a former 12th century nunnery dissolved in 1538 and replaced by the current buildings between the 16th and 18th centuries. The park was also the site of the Battle of Northampton during the Wars of the Roses. The house will not be open but the Orangery serves tea/coffee and cakes as well as more substantial lunches. There is a walled garden as well as less formal garden areas that can be explored at leisure. From here it is only a short distance back to the University.
