Restarting Events

Our Groups are up and running with their activities.   While there is generally no fixed maximum number of participants on an event, an event may have a limit in place based on it's risk assessment.   All events still require every participant to pre-book via the website.

General information

A circular walk of 10.2 miles (16.4km) in the rolling Chiltern Hills of North Herts.

Our route is wholly rural, timeless, endless farmland - some of which is visibly being decommissioned - with lots of views over, and from within, valleys.  The route is hilly, starting at its highest altitude its of 161m and falling to 100m.  There are three and half descents to the lowest altitudes, each followed by the opposite ascent to somewhere between 140m to 160m .  The steepest gradient is a climb of 46.7m over 316m.  The walk spitefully ends with a long climb of 48m over 1.06km, just to make you beg for a pint at the pub at the end of the walk.  Assuming the government hasn't abolished pubs by the date of the event.

The terrains are primarily field edge, track and pavement/road, using public footpaths, bridleways and country roads.  Most of the route is exposed to big, open skies.  Some fields contained livestock during the pilots of this route in 2018 and 2021.  Most of the ground is firm, but there are patches of mud, so sturdy footwear is mandatory.  The route includes an extensive patch of roadside walking on a valley floor, which can be particularly punishing on a hot, sunny day (with or without wind: beware of dehydration).

Points of interest include:

  • three churches;
  • a former windmill (converted into a residence);
  • Kingswalden Park (an old deer park);
  • likely still a few signs screaming "NO to Luton Airport Expansion!";
  • astonishing views at the top of, over and from within the Lilley Valley.

Wear sturdy boots, or - if dry for the preceding 48 hours - sturdy trainers.  Bring windproofs.

Bring packed lunch, lots of water (especially if either a sunny or a windy day), something to sit on, face covering and hand sanitiser.

Depending on regulations in force at the time, there may be an optional pub visit at the end.

If you intend to join this walk, please mark your attendance using the "join event" button below and keep this up-to-date.  We shall use this list as the basis of our NHS track & trace record-keeping.
