A 6-7 mile circular walk from Whiteways car park and picnic area. Downland walking on bridleways and footpaths through woodland and open hillsides with a short section of quiet country lane. Hopefully plenty of early spring flora and fauna.
From Whiteways it’s a steady climb through Houghton Forest to Bury Hill with views of the distant sea. Then onto grassy down land and through Gumber Farm (National Trust) to more woodland. The paths are generally well-defined with only short muddy patches. Finally, after crossing more open downs, a quiet country lane through Madehurst village back to Whiteways and a well-deserved cup of tea and cake from the café. It’s a moderate walk with some climbs and varied down and woodland scenery. Dogs are fine but need to be on lead when crossing stock grazing land or whenevr requested by the walk leader.
