Friston Forest Walk (with a pub lunch halfway round)
NOTE: non-standard date (Saturday) and pub lunch arrangements.
This walk is just over 8 miles (4 hours) taking in the wonderful woodland of Friston Forest at the start. We will pass through the pretty village of West Dean, with its beautiful 12th Century parish church of All Saints. We continue the walk joining part of the South Downs Way and down into the village of Litlington. At this halfway point we are then stopping for lunch and refreshments. There is the choice of a pub lunch at the Plough and Harrow, a lovely 17th Century flint country pub (see booking details below), or you can bring a packed lunch and eat it on the banks of the Cuckmere River. The walk then continues over open countryside, with views across to Alfriston, Alciston and Glynde, with Firle Beacon in the distance. The walk takes us through Lullington Heath, a National Nature Reserve, and then back into Friston Forest and returning to our starting point. There are also some quiet roads on parts of the route.
THE OPTIONAL PUB LUNCH REQUIRES ADVANCE BOOKING BY SUNDAY 14th APRIL - see details below. Please bring snacks and drinks to have along the way (and a packed lunch if you're not joining the pub lunch). Wear clothes appropriate for the weather and terrain. Dogs are welcome if kept on leads whenever near livestock, on roads or if requested by the walk leader.
