Epping to High Ongar via Greensted Church
Our walk today is a joint GOC Essex and London walk, held on Saturday because public transport is better that day. Our route follows part of the Essex Way from Epping to Ongar, passing through outer parts of Epping Forest and then into open countryside. It broadly follows the former Epping to Ongar Central line route which closed in 1994, by when the line was carrying only 80 passengers a day. (The Epping Ongar Railway today operates a heritage railway service on part of the line between North Weald and Ongar).
A highlight of the walk is Greensted Church, claimed to be the oldest wooden church in the world, probably the oldest wooden building in Europe still (in part) standing, and which is certainly a church dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period. We also pass two other historic churches, St Martin's in Ongar and St Mary's Church. All the churches are open and currently have condolence books to sign in memory of Her Late Majesty Elizabeth II.
We enter the bustling town of Ongar in Essex with its several historic buildings after only 7.5 miles, and then continue on a figure-of-eight loop to High Ongar and back, thus making a walk of about 10 miles. However, the walk can be left on our first entry to Ongar if desired.
