The Essex group generally walks on the third Sunday of each month.

The group covers all of the Essex area. We try to organise walks that cover most parts of Essex during the year.

Forthcoming events, prior event reports, about Essex and the FAQs appear from links to the left (or, if you're reading this on your phone, below).  Forthcoming events also appear below.

The co-ordinator for Essex GOC is John Gregory.

John joined GOC in July 2001, His first walk was from Elmdon, near the Cambs border, on a warm summer's day, and was about 15 miles. Thinking this must be the usual standard of walk, John decided he'd better get a bit fitter for this group. He was surprised to find that the next month's walk was only half that distance, and the group has never done such a long walk since!

John has made many friends at Essex GOC during his time walking with the group. John says it is the cameraderie of the group, as well as exploring and walking in many different areas of the county which keeps the members coming back for more!

The Group

Most Essex walks are pre-walked and organised by a number of regular members.  It is their enthusiasm for the great outdoors, friendliness and an easy way to enjoy the countryside, that makes Essex GOC a welcoming and friendly group.

Essex might not be known for its mountains or tourist industry. However, we have a very varied county, and we walk in some really beautiful country landscapes, through well kept country parks, forests, by rivers, along the seafront and inlets, farmland, and there are even the occasional peaceful islands along the Essex coast to explore!

Traditionally, we walk the third Sunday of the month, but in December join with Suffolk on the second Sunday to enjoy a shorter walk and Christmas lunch in a suitable establishment.

Visitors and new members are made to feel very welcome.
