Chester to Capenhurst
This is a largely flat, 7.5 mile walk from Chester station to Capenhurst station via the Shropshire Union Canal towpath, footpaths and lanes. Most of the walk is on good quality paths (gravel or tarmac) and lanes so should be mostly ok even after heavy rain.
Soon after leaving Chester Station we join the Shropshire Union canal and pass through the deep cutting beneath Chester's Roman walls and under the Bridge of Sighs where prisoners used to cross to attend chapel. Next we will pass by the three "staircase locks", which are surprisingly deep, as the canal drops down to Telford's basin. We will pass the historic Taylor's boatyard founded in 1795 and still in use. The walk continues along the canal crossing a 1992 bridge where the Deva link road was constructed underneath. We will pass by the Countess of Chester Country Park and lots of other wooded sections including an area which is planned to be turned into a rare wet meadow habitat of about 8 acres and will help store storm water and potentially act as a carbon sink.. Kingfishers can often be seen by the canal here. At Backford Bridge we will leave the canal and walk through Lea by Backford. After that we will pick up a footpath that runs by the railway line to Manor Farm and then via Dunkirk Lane back to where we parked at Capenhurst station.
