Coverdale Circular from Carlton
A pleasant walk in one of Yorkshires lesser known dales. From Carlton we descend through fields to join the river Cover which we more or less follow upstream passing through the hamlet of Gammersgill and on to Horsehouse and then Arkleside where we cross the river (and wander round a bit whilst I remember the way back !!!) We will have lunch shortly afterwards. The return leg takes us to slightly higher ground, still roughly following the river but with some lovely views back down the dale. After passing through another hamlet, Swineside, we drop back down to the river where we will have a coffee break before climbing again, briefly on a narrow road before taking to fields again then dropping back to cross the river and a very short steep climb then more fields back to Carlton.
