Wendover Woods and Canal, AONB The Chilterns
A 8.5 mile circular walk from the market town of Wendover at the foot of the Chiltern hills in Buckinghamshire. We will have a slow ascend along the Ridgeway through a mixture of coniferous and broad-leaved trees before joining a quiet footpath which leads to a small woodland which hopefully be a pop of colour from the bluebells. This will lead us to a part of the ancient Gryms dyke. We will then continue to walk across the plateau of Cock's Hill (240 m) and a large property with an artistic garden "recycled latrines's." We will then descent slightly to re-join the Ridgeway before continuing with the completion of ascent to the top of Wendover Woods (264 m). The highest point in Buckinghamshire. Here we will have magnificent views and photo opportunity with the local resident "Gruffalo." Wendover Woods is managed by Forestry England.
Elevation: Min. 115 m and Max. 264 m for entire walk.
On reaching the high point we will stop for a social distanced lunch with benches. Then we will descend, crossing a road before catching a glimpse of Rothschild's Halton Hall which is under Ministry of Defence ownership, presently. We will skirt the MOD area via a woodland before reaching the tranquil Wendover Arm canal which is part of the Grand Union. We will meander along this canal with friendly Moorhen's, Coot's and the resident Swans who were preparing their nest. We will pass under a Victorian bridge on entering Halton Village before crossing to the other bank which will lead us back to Wendover.
