Welford Park maybe known to some as the home of the Great British Bake Off but come late wintertime, you will see one of the finest snowdrop collections in the UK.
Blue skies above us as we arrived – a rare sight in recent weeks. The sunshine continued throughout our visit, where we saw carpets of snowdrops in the grounds of this fine estate.
Warm greetings for all as we assembled by the entrance – some on their first GOC event and many had travelled long distances to join us. Conversation flowed easily as we strolled around, admiring not only the snowdrops but the fine manor house, trees crowned with mistletoe, fungi and other late winter flowering plants, many with sweet scents to tease the nostrils. Despite being very busy, it was all well organised, with friendly staff and clear signage.
After our walkabout, the marquee beckoned for food and drinks. We discussed whether this was the same marquee used for the Great British Bake Off, which is filmed onsite. We came to the conclusion it probably was not. As we ate, we all relaxed in each other’s company, talked about what we had seen, and what else there was left to look at. Lots of laughter and there was a warm, friendly feel around us.
After lunch, most of us visited the interesting adjacent church and the formal gardens next to the House. Some (no names mentioned but if you know, you know!) returned to the marquee for cake!
All too soon, it was time to say to say our goodbyes. We left with a warm glow of having a lovely time in good company, and looking forward to meeting again on another event.
As the event was so popular and some who wanted to attend could not book, we are repeating this event in February 2027. Click here for details.
