  • Start/End Time 11:30 - 18:00
  • Near Saint Bees, Cumberland

  • Approx Distance 11.9 Miles
  • TerrainMost of the walk is easy. The "moderate" classification here, is due to the length of the walk. There are some ascents and descents along the St Bees Coast path, but nothing too onorous. Paths may sometimes be muddy in places, after heavy rain. Short sections of cliff path are precipitous, and could be difficult for those with a fear of heights.

A circular walk, inland along the valley of Pow Beck, almost to Whitehaven, and then back along the coast path on the St Bees Head Heritage Coast.  There will be an opportunity to look at the St. Mary and St Bega Priory Church in St Bees itself, which dates back to 1120 AD.  There are colliery remains from the famous undersea coal mine at Whitehaven, and there is lighthouse at St Bees Head, built in 1822.  The cliffs at St Bees Head are also an RSPB nature reserve for their breeding seabird colonies, and there are several hides/viewing platforms to see the birds at their best - bring your binoculars.  The walk visits beaches at Fleswick Bay and concludes with a stroll along the sandy beach at St Bees.
